In Mecus we are travelling again. We are very excited. And it’s because within a week starts in Kilkenny, Ireland, WordCamp Ireland 2010.
We could say that it’s not all work. We are going to to Ireland because it’s not very far. But it’s not true(mostly because Kilkenny is not an accessible city). We have many, many reasons for wanting to be there.
- A WordCamp is always a party. It’s a meeting place. One of the first things to get done is something we try to do whenever we go to a 2.0 event: desvirtualize. Many hours spent in the trac and chatting, reading blogs… Putting a face to the people which you work every day and share a beer gives sense to the word community.
- Donncha, responsible for development of multi-user WordPress, is in Ireland. In fact, Donncha is very difficult to see outside Ireland. So here we are. Having in mind the moment we are living (merging multi-user with unique-future-WordPress), our conversations of this weekend will be unique.
- The feeling. I wrote about it last year, when we attend to WordCamp San Francisco. It’s like a drug. To be there makes yourself to believe in yourself and in what you are doing again. It gives strength to your ideas. Strength to share them. It increases your team spirit. Makes you feel you are not alone.
- The information. Lots of things are gonna be told there. We could have been among the people who is going to tell things, like in WordCamp Spain 2008 and 2009 –and in WordCamp San Francisco 2009, but there’s a lot of people, very good people who have much more interesting things to tell right now than us. Fusion, BuddyPress, WP 3.0 are right here right now, and we don’t want to lose:
- Jane Wells. She is the team coordinator for new WordPress 3.0 UI –besides the chat and other couple of things
–. - Donncha O Caoimh. WordPress MU lead developer.
- Joost de Valk. One of the most prolific WordPress Plugins developer.
- Paul Gibbs. One of the main contributors of BuddyPress.
- Sabrina Dent. Our host. She specializes in what we do best: use WordPress as CMS..
- Jane Wells. She is the team coordinator for new WordPress 3.0 UI –besides the chat and other couple of things
- The length. It’s the first two-day WordCamp –if we don’t count WC Developers’ day in SF– and with three tracks! We are still doing our selection. In SF we went two people with two tracks (one blogger, one technical), so we could be in the two. Now it’s a lonely journey, so we must take importan decisions. Because everything, in every conference, is more than interesting.
In this WordCamp, like in the two that have been heldi in Spain until now, we are sponsors. This sponsorship is not for visibility. We are not going to use the possibility of advertising on the bag, or make a stand or a speech. We must keep in mind that, except San Francisco’s, the rest of WordCamps are quite local and the people coming are, almost everyone, people with technical background, so they are not potential customers.
We are WordCamp sponsors because we are going there to learn. To share very valuable information. And because we know that the revenues for the tickets do not cover the cost of organization. So, we wanted to give some support to the community, the community which makes us get up every morning.
200 people area awaiting for us next week. They are 500 less than in San Francisco and it seems it will be raining. It will be, for sure, much more familiar.
You can follow our comments and reviews about our journey in Ireland in our blog, our twitter account (@mecus) and the twitter account of our twitter in the act (@bi0xid) –if there’s wifi, of course
